Tena Dick
Tena Dick age 100 of Henderson, NE died Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Henderson Care Center, Henderson, Nebraska. She was born on a farm in Litchfield, NE on July 21, 1913 to John and Helena Gade. When she was five years old, her father passed away. Taking care of eight children was a hardship for her mother, so she was sent to live with her uncle Jake and Aunt Anna who lived in Henderson. Tena spent one year with them and then was reunited with her family. When Tena turned nine years old the Reverend John F. Epp family took her into their home as a foster child. This was a good home and she enjoyed being there.
Tena received her public education at District 37. She also attended Bible School for two years. She was baptized on May 16, 1932 and joined the Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Tena spent many years singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, and being a faithful member of the auxiliary.
Tena worked at the Henderson Community Hospital as a nurse’s aid. She married Henry Bergen on July 27, 1956. He had two children, Dean and Lorene. Henry passed away on November 17, 1962.
After Henry’s death Tena began working in the Henderson Clinic. She worked with Drs. Friesen and Heib. She enjoyed her work there very much. During this time she married Frank Dick, who had two children, Tom and Geraldine. They were married for thirty-one years. They enjoyed gardening together and as well visiting friends and neighbors. They enjoyed traveling and going to church. After Frank’s death she moved into the Midtown Apartments and later into the Henderson HealthCare Center where she continued to be a kind and helpful neighbor and an inspiration to all who knew her.
Survivors include step-children Dean Bergen and Geraldine Dick. Five step grandchildren and nine step great Grandchildren.
Tena was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, Henry Bergen and Frank Dick. One step-son Tom Dick and three sisters, Anna, Elizabeth and Emma and four brothers, Bill, Henry, George and Fred.
Graveside services are scheduled for 9:15 am Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at the Friesen Cemetery, Henderson, NE. A Memorial service will follow at 10:00 am at the Bethesda Mennonite Church with the Reverend Jim Voth officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Bethesda Mennonite Church Radio Fund or to the Henderson Heritage Park. Visitation begins after 1:00 pm on Tuesday at the mortuary.
