Ruth Lawrence
Ruth Irene (Turner) Lawrence, age 88 of York, departed this life Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016 in York.
She was born Dec. 10, 1927 in Centerville, Ohio to Stanley E. and Rebecca (McCarty) Turner. At the age of 12, she was immersed into Christ, and served him faithfully all of her life. Ruth educated in the public schools of Ohio, and attended David Lipsconb College in Nashville, Tenn. On Sept. 30, 1950 she married Robert Lawrence, in Dayton, Ohio and to this union five children were born, Sterling, Melody, Loyal, Joy and Noel. Ruth enjoyed reading, gardening, canning, and loved to go on road trips to see her family on the east coast. She also enjoyed collecting fine china and crystal. She loved trying new recipes, and enjoyed genealogy. Ruth was also involved with Helping Hands at York College.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Lawrence of York; son, Sterling (Catherine) Lawrence, of Candler, N.C.; daughter, Melody Lawrence and her husband Henderson Gilleland of Cullowhee, N.C.; son, Loyal (Carol) Lawrence of Mars Hill, N.C.; daughter, Joy (Michael) Clark, of Selah, Wash. and son, Noel (Tracey) Lawrence of Greeley, Co. Ruth is also survived by her grandchildren, Brandon and Chrystal Lawrence, Chesney Gilleland, Caroline Lawrence, Taylor Gilleland, Christopher Lawrence, Jesse and Mason Clark, Jonathan, Jennifer, Eli, Jack, and Blaise Lawrence. She is also survived by her sister Bonnie Zalewski of York and brother, Lanny Turner of Atlanta, Ga. along with two great-grandchildren who are expected soon.
Ruth is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Stanley.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016 at the East Hill Church of Christ in York with Gayle Crowe officiating. Burial will be in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary with the family greeting friends from 6 -8 p.m. Monday evening. Memorials may be directed to Helping Hands at York College or Tabitha Hospice.
