George Roger Burgess died at age 82 at his home in York, Nebraska on December 23, 2020, due to long-term heart complications. He was able to spend his final days at home, surrounded by his family.
Roger was born on August 11, 1938, in Burlington, Iowa to George and Mary Dotson Burgess. He was raised in Iowa and Colorado and graduated from Morning Sun, Iowa High School, in 1956. Roger continued his education at Colorado State University graduating in 1960, with a degree in Agricultural Business. After serving in the Army from 1961 to 1963 as a Medical Specialist, Roger married Lois Geraldine Lawton on March 28, 1964, in Burbank, California. They lived in Georgia, Wyoming, and Illinois while Roger worked as a District Manager with Mutual of New York. In 1968 they moved their growing family to Iowa where Roger was an Agricultural Loan Officer with the State Bank of Waverly. During this he earned a graduate degree in banking. In 1971, they moved to Missouri where Roger ranched and farmed with his father.
In 1978, Roger moved his family to York, Nebraska where he worked as Vice President of Farm Loans with Cornerstone Bank, obtained another graduate degree, and was very engaged in his community, serving as president of the York Rotary, Booster, and Youth Football clubs. He rented his farmland to a young man just getting started, a handshake business relationship that lasted 36 years.
For the past 16 years, Roger and Gerry have been spending their winters in Arizona enjoying fellowship with many friends and extending Roger’s golf enthusiasm year-round.
What he valued most are his faith and family. Roger made a choice to serve the Lord at age 11 and kept true to that choice throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife Lois Geraldine Burgess, children Gentry and Elaine Burgess of Kirkland Washington and their children Victoria and Grant, Troy and Beth Burgess of Kirkland Washington and their sons Joe and Danny, Brian and Katie Burgess of Scottsdale Arizona and their son Brady, Wade and Andrea Burgess of Austin Texas and their sons Micah, Luke, and Brett, and Jennifer and Ryan Barry of Omaha Nebraska and their sons Hudson, Dane, and Preston.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his sister Thelma Burgess Hennen.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m., Thursday, December 31, 2020 at the York Area Senior Center, 725 N Nebraska Ave, York, Nebraska. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am at the York Senior Center. Roger’s service will be broadcast live on Metz Mortuary’s Facebook page. A graveside service at Greenwood Cemetery will follow the funeral. COVID 19 Funeral Guidelines will be implemented with limited spaced seating (75% occupancy), 6 feet of separation between household units and masks required.
Roger had boundless energy and was an eternal optimist about nearly everything except golf, finances, and Cornhusker football, (where he was very pragmatic). He always had a smile on his face, a spring in his step, a twinkle in his eye, and an encouraging word for everyone. To him, every day was a new day; you could not keep him down and he could always be counted on to lighten the mood with a good story or a joke. There was never a better person to cheer you up or to lend a helping hand. He was a great mediator because he truly wanted the best for everyone, and people trusted him to do what was right for them.
Roger’s integrity was rooted in his belief in God and his faith in Christ, his Redeemer. He taught his children to work and was always finding job opportunities to keep them busy and out of trouble.
Roger loved the land and growing things and you could count on him to bring the weather into any conversation that lasted longer than 60 seconds. His garden was his pride and joy until travel and golf got in the way. After retiring from the bank, he continued consulting between traveling around the world, visiting friends, and making new ones.
After moving to Nebraska, It took him about 10 minutes to become a Cornhusker fan. It probably took even less time for him to become your friend. He valued each one of you. To have a good friend is to be one and he was one of the best.
