John Robert Brogan
John Robert Brogan died peacefully, with family at his side, on Jan. 1, 2011. He was the fourth of four boys born to William E. and Anna (Fox) Brogan on Jan. 26, 1929, in Tilden.
John Brogan graduated from Tilden High School in 1946, and a highlight of his high school career was playing baseball on the Neligh Legion team with Richie Ashburn, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was the recipient of a Regents Scholarship, graduating from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1950 and the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1954.
During law school, he was a member of the Army Reserve and was called up for active duty in the spring of 1951, which interrupted his law school career. He served in the Army as an artillery officer and was stationed in Georgia, California and Germany for two years during the Korean War. After completing his military service, he returned to law school, graduating in 1954.
On Sept. 3, 1955, he was united in marriage to Lenora Grothe in Wisner.
John was a member of the Nebraska Bar Association for 54 years and loved his profession. His work career began as a claims adjustor and defense counsel for USF&G before settling in York to set up a private law practice in 1955. He started Brogan Abstract Co. in 1960, which later merged to become York County Title Co.
He was a member of the NPPD (formerly Consumers Public Power District) board of directors for 12 years, including time served as president, and was instrumental in having York selected as the Operations Center. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed working at the office in his spare time.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother William and sister-in-law Helen Brogan, brother James Brogan and many aunts and uncles.
He is survived by his wife, Lenora; son Tom of Lincoln; daughter Anne and her husband, Rich Selle of Pueblo West, Colo.; daughter Jane and her husband, Tim Esser of York; four grandchildren, including Alison Selle of Pueblo West, Colo., John Selle of Boston, Mass., and Kathleen and John Esser of York. Also surviving are his brother, Thomas and wife Jeanne Brogan of Norfolk; sister-in-law Verna Brogan of Madison; sister-in-law Grace Ann and husband Robert Wordekemper of Beemer and many nieces and nephews.
The family is especially grateful for the care their father received from the wonderful staff at Fairview Manor and the dignity afforded his last days by hospice and especially Aseracare RN Star Stuhr.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in York with Monsignor James Reinert officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Wisner Cemetery. A rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Metz Mortuary with visitation until 9 p.m. and family present 5-6:30 p.m.
