John Overing

John Edwin Overing, age 94, of York, NE died Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Lincoln, NE. He was born November 1, 1926 at Red Cloud, Nebraska to Edwin James and Nina (Simmons) Overing.

​He graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1944. John enlisted in the Army in 1944 and was stationed at Ft. Collins, CO, Camp Hood, Texas, Corvallis, OR, and Ft. Sam Houston, Texas.

He was discharged in 1946 and attended the University of Nebraska and graduated with an Agricultural Engineering Degree in 1950. He taught classes to veterans at Bradshaw High School from 1953-1955. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in 1955 as an Agricultural Engineer in York and Hebron and as an Irrigation Engineer at Grand Island and Lincoln. He was a registered professional engineer, past member of the American Legion and member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at York. He was a member of the Hebron School Board and was a Cub Scout Master.

He retired in 1987 and returned to the farm at York in 1989.

He married Lorena (Schleif) Overing of Lincoln on December 30, 1951. To this union three children were born; one daughter, Sue (John) O’Shea of Ann Arbor, Michigan; two sons, John (Patty) Overing of Danville, Kentucky, and Michael (Theresa) Overing of Pasadena, California. They were blessed with seven grandsons Brennan and Cailen O’Shea, Ann Arbor, James and Matthew Overing, Danville, and Robert, John Overing and Andrew all of Pasadena and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother-in-law William Biggs, sister-in-law Jean Schleif, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lorena, brother and sisters.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 12, 2021 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with the Reverend Rob Garton officiating. Interment with military honors will be in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be one prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be directed to the church.
