Herb Rathje
Surrounded by his loving family, Herb Rathje, 84, of York, Neb., died on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018, in Grand Island, NE.
Herb was born Nov. 3, 1934, in Belgrade, Neb., to Hubert and Marie (Hellbusch) Rathje. On Aug. 7, 1965, he was united in marriage to Darline White in Grand Island. In 1955, Herb started his career in the U.S. Naval Air Force VW-15 in Patuxent River, Md., and Argentia, Newfoundland, Canada. Later, he was a cattle buyer throughout the Midwest for 56 years. Herb enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in York. He was an avid golfer and a member of the men’s golf leagues in Henderson, Neb., and Lincoln, Neb.
Herb is survived by his wife, Darline, of York; daughters Brenda Rathje (Ben Simon) of Minneapolis, Minn., and Dr. Lonelle Rathje of Maryville, Mo.; sister Rheva (Rathje) Wagner of Surprise, Ariz.; and nephew Dustin (Kim) Cox of Phoenix, Ariz.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Gloria (Rathje) Creasy of Phoenix, Ariz.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., on Monday, December 31, 2018 at Faith Lutheran Church in York. The Rev. Dr. Heath Trampe will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in York. Thereafter, the family will receive guests during a reception at Faith Lutheran Church following the burial. There will be no viewing or visitation at the mortuary. Memorials may be directed to his family for later designation.
