Henry Janzen

Henry Janzen passed away on March 25, 2014 at the Henderson Care Center at the age of 93.
He was born Aug. 28, 1920 to Jacob D. and Helena (Peters) Janzen on the farm in Hamilton County, ¼ mile north of the Friesen Cemetery. He was the 6th of 10 children.
He attended grade school at 73 East for eigh years and high school for two years in Henderson. After leaving school he worked on farms in Mountain Lake, Minn. and spent one winter working at a meat packing plant in Omaha.
On June 1, 1941, upon his confession of faith in Christ as his personal savior, he was baptized by Rev. A.W. Friesen and received into membership at Bethesda Mennonite Church where he remained a lifelong member.
On Dec. 14, 1950, Hank was united in marriage to Etta Jean Plettner by Reverend A.W. Friesen. It was a Thursday evening wedding at the bride’s parents’ home with immediate family present. They spent 63 years together as husband and wife. To this marriage were born four children, one daughter and three sons.
Following their marriage they lived on a small acreage near Henderson for six months. They moved to a farm near Stockham for five years. In 1957 they moved to a farm 4 ½ miles south and 1 ½ miles west of Henderson and remained there until Hank retired from farming in 1974. After moving to Henderson he worked as a custodian at Henderson Community School.
He is survived by his wife and companion of 63 years, Jean; daughter, Patti and her husband Steve Barr of McKinney, Texas; three sons, Mike Janzen of Henderson, Terry Janzen of Olathe, Kan. and Stan Janzen and his wife Diana of Ormond Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Harry (Clara) Ratzlaff of Henderson, Mrs. Homer (Doris) Graber of Pretty Prairie, Kan. and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gustav and Walt; four sisters, Mrs. Fred (Tena) Friesen, Mrs. Harry (Goldie) Wall, Mrs. Daniel C. (Anna) Goertzen, Mrs. Albert H. (Olga) Friesen and Mrs. Melvin (Deloris) Kroeker.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Interment will follow in the Friesen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. on Thursday and from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. on Friday at Metz Mortuary in Henderson. Memorials may be directed to the Bethesda Radio Broadcast.
