Edwin L. Peters
Edwin L. Peters, age 91, of Henderson, NE, passed away at Henderson Care Center on Thursday, April 24, 2014. He was born on March 25, 1923 to Leonard and Sarah (Siebert) Peters on a farm near Stockham, NE. Ed grew up on the family farm as the oldest of three boys. He was a brother to John and Levi; the family was later joined by a cousin, Cornelia Peters, who was from then on their sister.
Ed attended country school at District 10 through the 8th grade. It was his lifelong desire to be a high school graduate and in 1980 he received his GED. This gave him a great sense of accomplishment of which he was very proud.
Ed was baptized upon his confession of faith on May 24, 1943 at Bethesda Mennonite Church by the Rev. A.W. Friesen. He was a lifelong member of Bethesda.
Ed was united in marriage to Elvera (Janzen) Peters on May 8, 1945. To this union three children were born: Ruth Anne, Richard, and Margie.
Ed spent several years before he married working for grain companies and driving truck. When he married Elvera he began his farming career which spanned most of his adult years. In retirement he went back to driving truck for area farmers and other local companies. He loved to drive! This manifested itself in his love of restoring antique cars and tractors and collecting parts and tools to work on them. He enjoyed driving his cars and later his tractors in parades and choosing children from the crowd to drive his ¼ scale John Deere Model “D” replica tractor that he made from collecting old parts and modifying them.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Elvera; children Ruth Ann (Don) Reed, Tucson, AZ; Richard (Rebecca) Peters, Huachuca City, AZ; and Margie (Everett) Waltner, Freeman, SD; grandchildren: Beth (Noah) Suby; Cindy Reed; Kim (Amanda) Peters; Michael (Julie) Peters; Collin (Anna) Waltner; Jarod (Megan) Waltner; Megan J. Waltner and Lindsay Waltner. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren whom he adored.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Sarah; in-laws, Herman and Eva Janzen; granddaughter, Tamara Reed; brother-in-law, Darrell Janzen and sister-in-law, Beverly Friesen.
