Dorothy Ehlers
Dorothy Jean Ehlers, age 94, of York, NE, died Thursday, May 23, 2019 at York. She was born January 24, 1925 near Benedict, NE to Lynn and Elsie (Shipferling) Myers. She graduated from Benedict High School in 1942, and following graduation was employed at the Ordinance plant in Fremont. On January 26, 1944 she married Bob Ehlers at her parents’ home. They enjoyed life on the farm south west of Benedict together for 58 years raising six children. Dorothy remained on the farm until the fall of 2018.
Dorothy and Bob were members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Benedict, where she was involved in many activities, especially making quilts with her dear friends. She and Bob spent many years following their kids in their school activities. After that she enjoyed watching all sports and they often traveled to professional baseball games. She also enjoyed gambling trips with the York Fun Club, and spending time with close friends.
She is survived by her children: Jackie Embree of Daytona Beach, FL, Rosanne Bittinger of Conroe, TX, Jeff (Ellen) Ehlers of Lakewood, CO, Fred Ehlers of York, and Gina (Todd) Schoch of York. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Lisa (Bo) Guidry, Susan Nienhueser, Jason Ehlers, Bob (Rebecca) Bittinger, Tom Ehlers, Andrea Holmes, Justin (Bri) Schoch, Jill (Nick) Swim, Nick Ehlers, Natalie Ehlers (David Carey), Kyle (MiKayle) Ehlers, Maddie Ehlers (Jono Parker), and Jordan Schoch.
15 great-grandchildren: Matthew, Brittany, JT, Cole, Tierney, Eli, Layne, Krayton, Graham, Ava, Ryan, Rhett, Milana, Kinsley, and soon to be born, Reese. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Bret, two grandchildren Travis Bittinger, and Kristine Holmes, sons-in-law Fred Embree, Gaylon Goar, and daughter-in-law Lori Ehlers.
She is also preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses Jim (Verdena), Leonard (Florence), Rodney (Orleatha), Bill (Phyllis), Martha (Lloyd) Morris and Erma (Ted) Lampe, as well as her in-laws Roger (Ethel) Ehlers, and Louise (Ed) Vanhouse.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church, Benedict, with the Reverend Kimberly Belken officiating. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, west of Benedict. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM Tuesday, May 28, with the family greeting friends between 6:00 – 7:00 PM that same evening at the mortuary in York. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
