Dennis L. Stuhr of Prescott, AZ was born in York, Nebraska in 1942 to Ralph and Flora (Kruse) Stuhr.
He passed to his eternal home on April 25th, 2019. His father, a York County farmer, helped win WWII by
raising commodities. Dennis was baptized as an infant at St John Lutheran Church in Waco and was
confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton, NE. He graduated from Zion Lutheran Parochial
School in Hampton and Bradshaw High School. Dennis played in Bradshaw's first Friday night football
game. He studied drafting at Nebraska Vocational Technical School in Milford and civil engineering at
the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
Dennis started out working for the Nebraska Game and Fish Commission in the Engineering
Department as a draftsman/engineering aide until he was drafted into the US Army. He took basic
training in Fort Leonard Wood and then was assigned to the 84th Engineering Battalion in Fort Ord,
CA. The battalion was deployed to Vietnam in 1965. He arrived on the shores of Qui Nhon on his
birthday, taking 30 days to get there from San Francisco. After his discharge from the army, he
proceeded to obtain his degree in civil engineering, using his GI Bill, while also continuing to work for
the Nebraska Game and Fish Department in Lincoln. In 1969 he married Carolyn Luchsinger. He
accepted his first job as a professional engineer with the US Forest Service working for the Apache
National Forest in Springerville, AZ in 1971. After several years as a widower he married Barbara
Sickles in Community Presbyterian Church in Springerville in 1974 and accepted a job with the
Prescott National Forest. He eventually became their Forest Facility Engineer until he retired in 2004.
The most fun he had working for the forest was placing some of their historical facilities into the
Arizona Rooms With a View Cabin Rental program.
Dennis was active in the youth soccer program (AYSO) in Prescott for many years as a referee and a
member of the board. He eventually became the head referee and was responsible for recruiting,
training and assigning refs for each game.
He had many interests. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, traveling with his wife, collecting
Marx trains, restoring his 1950 Farmall tractor that he rode in the Rodeo parade, and cheering on his
beloved Nebraska sports teams. He was a member of the Mile High Tractor club and the Central
Arizona Model R.R. Club. He also served on the Parks and Recreation board for the City of Prescott.
He has been a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Prescott, AZ since 1975, serving many
years as the chairman of the finance and maintenance committee.
Those preceding him in death were his wife Carolyn Stuhr with an unborn child, his brother Philip, his
father, his brother-in-law Merle Myers, and brother-in-law Ken Theinhardt.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Barbara Stuhr, his mother Flora Stuhr of York, NE; sons
Dustin R. (Brenda) Stuhr of Washington state and Christopher L. (Cora) Stuhr of Tucson and four
precious granddaughters Brooklyn, Mililani,. Alyx and Tessa. Brothers Ken Stuhr of Lincoln, NE,
Jerry (Carol) Stuhr of Kearney, NE, Galen (Terri) Stuhr of Seward, NE, Brad (Dianne) Stuhr of Frisco,
CO. Sisters Sydney (Jim) Gardels of Norfolk, NE, Judy Myers of York, NE, Sheryl Stuhr of York, NE,
Phyllis Theinhardt of Tulsa, OK and Gayle Stuhr of Grand Island, NE. Former sister-in-law Jo
Gruelueschen of NE and many other extended family members.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with the Reverend Mark Haefner officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery north of Hampton, NE. Visitation will be from 1-8:00 p.m., Thursday with memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church, 231 W Smoke Tree Ln, Prescott, AZ 86301.
