Gertrude Westwood

Gertrude I. Westwood age 91 of Grand Island, NE. died Friday, November 04, 2005 at Grand Island. She was born March 14, 1914 at Utica, NE. to George W. and Ada (Hemphill) Covert. She was a 1927 graduate of Utica High School and was married to Glenn Westwood on June 27, 1940 at Omaha, NE. Gertrude and her husband operated the Westwood Hatchery and then owned and operated the York Cab Co. in York before moving to Grand Island in 1965. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in York and presently was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. Gertrude was active in her Bible Study at the Grandview Apartments in Grand Island and also provided childcare for several physicians and dentists in Grand Island. She loved spending time in her flower garden as well as working puzzles, reading and cooking. She had a special love for children and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas Westwood and his wife Nadine of Kearney and Terry Westwood and his wife Mary Ann of Grand Island; daughters, Carmen and her husband Steve Luellman of Elkhorn and Colene and her husband Harold White of Grand Island. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Danny, brother, Floyd Covert, sister, Gladys Liermann, and a great-granddaughter, Amanda Simmons.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 7, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Del Roper officiating. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at York. Memorials may be directed to the family. Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m., Sunday with the family greeting friends and neighbors from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., Sunday evening.
