Lucile Walkup
On August 10, 2006 the Lord reached down and plucked a beautiful flower, Lucile Agnes Walkup age 99 of rural York, Nebraska to add to his garden. She was born on Monday, September 17, 1906 to Chester and Carrie (Smith) Folts in rural York County at the farm home. She attended Rural York County District #41 and York College Academy where she graduated. She attended York College and taught two years in Rural York County District #46. She married Claude Walkup Easter Sunday, April 8, 1928 in her family farm home in York County and was married 62 years. They resided on a farm NW of York where their four children, Caroline, Wendell, Shirley and Merrill were born.
Lucile was a member of rural Shiloh United Brethren Church and the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York where she was active in the Women’s society and taught Sunday school
Her interests centered around her home and family. One of her life’s joys was working with her hands making gifts for family and friends by embroidering, quilting, crocheting and sewing. She enjoyed raising chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. Gardening, growing vegetables and flowers was a big part of her farm life. She raised over 250 varieties of mums and numerous kinds of roses. In later life Lucile baked and decorated cakes. She made many cakes for weddings and other special occasions. She baked their own 50th wedding anniversary cake.
Her memories will be cherished by her four children and spouses, Caroline (Clinton) Carr of Lyons, NE; Wendell (Margaret) Walkup of York; Shirley (Bill) Armold of Lincoln, NE; Merrill (Shari) Walkup of Runnells, IA; eight grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in-law Evelyn (George) Folts, Grace (Arlo) Folts, Evelyn (Marshall) Folts and Louise (Walkup) Merchant.
In addition to her husband Claude, she was preceded in death by her mother in 1913, father, step-mother Alda Stevens Folts, five brothers George, Virgil, Arlo, Marshall and Melvin; four sisters Mildred, Grace, Cleo and Bernice; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law and granddaughter Carin Gaye Carr.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Michael Laing officiating. Burial was in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York
