LeRoy Daniel Veleba, 83, of York, NE, passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, in Lincoln, NE. He was born October 5, 1926 in Pleasant Dale, NE to William and Mary (Dolezal) Veleba. At age 11, LeRoy and his family moved to York where they farmed west of town. In April 1946 LeRoy enlisted in the U.S. Army with basic training in Campoke, LA. He was later stationed in Kyoto, Japan. After completion of duty, he returned to the family farm. Later he was employed on the CB&Q Railroad followed by 33 Ĺ years working for Burnham Concrete, Gerhold Concrete, and Overland Concrete.

LeRoy enjoyed all outdoor sports including fishing and hunting. He was an avid gardener and loved growing vegetables and giving them away to family and friends. He was a member of VFW Post 1609 and St. Joseph Catholic Church in York. He was married to Shirley Abarr on September 15, 1955. They would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this month.

Survivors include his wife Shirley of York; son Ron and his wife Jan of York; sister, Rosemary Holub of Gretna, NE; one brother David and his wife Thelma Veleba of York; two grandchildren Aaron and Valerie; three great-grandchildren; cousins; nieces; and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother Bill Veleba, and one brother-in-law Don Holub.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in York. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Crete, NE. A Rosary was said Monday evening at 6 p.m. at Metz Mortuary.
