Virgil Thorne

Virgil L. Thorne, age 82, of York, NE, died Monday, December 6, 2010 at Aurora, NE. He was born April 9, 1928 in rural York County to Marion and Blanche (Stetzel) Thorne. While growing up, Virgil attended country school in York County. He was a veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was married to Jane Shelton on August 17, 1952 at Archer, NE. Virgil was a dairy farmer in the York area until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York, the Eagles Club, and enjoyed square dancing.

He is survived by his wife Jane of York; son Ron (Jacquelyn) Thorne of Columbia City, IN; daughter Sally Bennett of Lincoln, NE; grandsons, Douglas Drake of Pittsburgh, PA and Matthew Drake of Cromwell, IN; granddaughter Sarah Bennett of Lincoln, NE. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Cameron Drake and Payton Drake of Topeka, IN, Brendon Temple and Kaidon Bennett both of Lincoln, NE; one sister Dorothy Walford of York, NE; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Morris and Marion Edward; and a sister Mildred King.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 10, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Art Phillips officiating. Burial was in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
