Melvin Thompson

Melvin Thompson, age 91 of Omaha and former longtime York resident, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Omaha. Mel was born September 19, 1913 at Gresham, NE to Clarence and Anna (Lindquist) Thompson. They moved to Osceola and then Aurora where Mel graduated from Aurora High School in 1930. His family then moved to York where Mel graduated from York College in 1934 and he went to work for the Woolworth Company. He married Eileen Jokerst at York in August of 1946. Mel joined the Nebraska Army National Guard in 1933 and served in the Air Corps in WWII in the Euopean Theatre. Mel joined the Service Company, 134th Infantry in York in 1947 and retired in 1973. Mel’s full-time technician service as an Administrative Supply Technician dated from November 1948 to October 1973. Following his retirement, Mel and Eileen moved to Omaha. Eileen died in August of 1984.

Mel is survived by his two sisters, Irene Feaster of Grand Island, NE and Isabelle and her husband Larry Gassman of Lincoln; sister-in-law Lou Thompson of York and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are special friends, Bill and Mindy Geis and their children Melissa, Tori and Sophie all of Omaha. Preceding him in death were his wife Eileen, parents, brother Maurice and brother-in-law Burton Feaster.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the Metz Chapel in York with the Rev. Joe Lape. Burial was in the St. Joseph Cemetery at York.
