Irene Jones Stuhr
Irene M. Jones Stuhr age 76 of York, died August 23, 2005 in Lincoln. She was born January 21, 1929 in Britt, Iowa to Thomas and Bernice Hulme. After high school graduation in Bellevue, NE, Irene moved with her family to the York area where she helped her father at the York Airport. On April 29, 1949 she married Jerry “Bud” Jones in York. Together they had two daughters. During their early marriage, they lived in many western states following Bud’s occupation as a heavy equipment operator. In 1960 Bud and Irene moved to Waco and opened a grocery store and café with Bud’s parents Roy and Alta Jones. Irene started working at Grant’s Truck stop as a waitress on the day it opened, ending as the café manager in 1973 when she went to work at Hughes Bros. in Seward as an overhead crane operator. Irene retired from Hughes Bros. in 1989. Bud Jones died in 1983. Irene was married to Richard “Dick” Stuhr on May 18, 1990 in Waco, NE. During their marriage they lived in York. Dick preceded Irene in death in 1993.
Irene was a longtime member of Peace Lutheran Church in Waco. She volunteered at the York General Hospital, the York General Hearthstone and the York Senior Center. As long as her health allowed, she enjoyed traveling with the Senior Fun Club especially with her close friend Mildred Klemsz. She had fun playing cribbage and cards and being part of the Friendship Club and the “Red Hat Society”. Irene enjoyed the time she spent with family and friends.
She is survived by her daughters Berniece Jones of Lincoln, Julie (Rodger) Pracheil of York; grandsons, James Pracheil of Laramie, Wyoming, Christopher (Brenda) Pracheil of Lansing, Michigan and great-grandson, Simon Pracheil of Lansing. She is also survived by four step-sons, Rich (Sheila) Stuhr of Olathe, KS, Mike (Marla) Stuhr of Waco, Ron Stuhr of Chicago, Illinois, Jeff (Sue) Stuhr of York; two step-daughters, Barb (Rod) Drake of Omaha, Susie (Jim) Nichols of Beaver Crossing; eleven step-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren; brother, Thomas (Diana) Hulme of Mesa, Arizona; sister JoAnn (Barry) Schwartz of San Jose, California; step-mother, Sybil Hulme of Sunnyvale California; sisters-in-law, Donna Hulme of Fountain Hills, Arizona, Barb Hulme of Grand Island, Faye Jones of Geneva, Gwen Jones of Cochise, Arizona, Ellen Douglas of Edwardsville, Illinois, Florence Treakle of York, Frances (Lester) Spader of Waco and numerous nieces and nephews.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Jerry (Bud) Jones and Richard (Dick) Stuhr; brothers Lenard Hulme and Ronald Hulme; brothers-in-law, Donald Jones, Vern Jones and Jack Douglas.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2005 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Waco with the Reverend Charles Ramsey officiating. Interment will be in the Waco Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 5:00 p.m., Thursday at the mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the church, the Lupus Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
