Velma Snyder

Velma L. Snyder age 90, of York, died Thursday, December 8, 2005 at Valentine, NE. She was born in Ashe County, NC. on December 23, 1914 to Stephen and Nannie (Lewis) Horne. She was affiliated with the Baptist Church in her early years. Velma married Mason Roberts on June 13, 1933 in Johnson County, TN and came to Wyoming to live. She and her husband lived in Wyoming and South Dakota. After his death, she married Robert J. Snyder on April 6, 1958 in Edgemont, SD and moved to Alliance, NE in 1979. Her husband, Bob, passed away at York on May 20, 2005 and Velma moved to Valentine to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York, Eastern Star, OES Grace Chapter #87, Past Matron of the Eastern Star, York Garden Club, Federated Women’s Club and Methodist Church circle. She was an avid reader and enjoyed painting and gardening. Velma is survived by her daughter, Ruby and son-in-law, Dick Coleman of Valentine; grandchildren, Greg Coleman of Alexandria, VA and Susie Coleman of Colorado; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Guynan of North Platte and Tyrah Spotts of Colorado; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Horne of Mountain City, TN; brother-in-law, Jack (Molly) Snyder of Wray, CO. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Mae Norris and Avis Bettis and brothers, Burnis Horne and Lewis Horne.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Jeff Wulf officiating. Burial will be in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or donor’s choice.
