Dorothy Schmidt

Dorothy M. Schmidt, “Mrs. Smitty,” age 79 of McCool Jct., NE died Sunday, September 6, 2009 at her home in McCool Jct after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born September 23, 1929 in Ruskin, NE to John and Viola (Spohnheimer) Wulf. Dorothy was the middle child between two older brothers and two younger sisters. Her mother died in 1932 and Dorothy and her sister Ruby were then raised by their grandmother in Hebron, NE. Dorothy married Martin Schmidt in Hebron on November 2, 1947. Together they owned and operated the Daylight Donut in York, NE for 15 years. They then owned and operated Smitty’s Drive In Liquor in McCool Jct. Martin died Sept 18, 1994. She then continued to operate Smitty’s for a total of 28 yrs. Dorothy was also a Shaklee Dealer. She was the honored Business Woman and Grand Marshal of the 2003 Mustang Roundup.

She is survived by her son Rob Schmidt of York, daughters, Susan and her husband Don Neville of McCool Jct, NE, Linda and her husband Bob Gibbs of Venice, FL and Gina and her husband Joe Michel of McCool Jct. Her 12 Grandchildren include; Jason Neville of Lincoln, NE, Tim Neville of Omaha, NE, Shannon Jones of Lincoln, America Sass of Bellevue, NE, Arlo Gibbs of North Port, FL, Seth Gibbs of King of Prussia, PA, Tobias Gibbs of Venice, FL, Brittany Schmidt of Kearney, NE, Alexandra Schmidt of Gresham, NE, Austin Schmidt of York, Ariel Michel of McCool Jct, and Allison Michel also of McCool Jct. 18 Great Grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Ruby Tempel of Clifton, KS. Dorothy also leaves her wonderful customers and friends as well. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Lawrence and Kenneth Wulf and her sister Esther Yung.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in McCool Jct. with the Reverend Barbara L. Bauers officiating with burial in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to McCool Junction Public Schools or to the Cat Sanctuary at York Adopt a Pet. Visitation begins after 1:00 pm Tuesday at Metz Mortuary.
