Elva Schafer

Elva A. Schafer, 86, of York, died November 21, 2010, in York. She was born March 16, 1924, to Marvin and Loraine (Madsen) Parks in Grand Island. She married Walter E. Schafer June 14, 1949. They were married 43 years until his death in 1992. She continued to live on the family farm until 1996 when she moved to York. Elva and Walter farmed in the Elm Creek area from 1949 to 1967, then moved to a farm north of Holdrege. Elva cooked at R-3 and R-6 Rural Schools in Phelps County and also at Methodist Memorial Homes in Holdrege.

Elva is survived by two daughters, Mildred Nesladek (Jim), of Polson, Montana; Martha Soderholm (Robert), of York; two sons, Vernon Schafer of Denver, Colorado, and Karl Schafer; sister-in-law, Martha (Schafer) Rippen, of Omaha, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Don Jensen, of Hastings; seven grandchildren: Lisa (Nesladek) Bonde (Cornell), of York; Heidi (Nesladek) Wilson (Drew), of Aurora, Colorado; Jenni Nesladek of Polson, Montana; Crystal (Soderholm) Terrell (Seth), of Nashville, Tennessee; Amber Soderholm of York; Jamey Schafer (Amanda), of Magnolia, Delaware, Angela (Schafer) Marcotte (Steve) of Kansas City, Missouri; six great-grandchildren: James and Thomas Bonde; Kennedy Wilson; Haley and Kellon Schafer; Payton and Landon Marcotte; plus many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, parents, and siblings.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at the Metz Chapel in York with Seth Terrell officiating. Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. at the Wood River Cemetery at Wood River, NE. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
