Elsie Powers
Elsie Powers, age 89, of York, NE, died Tuesday, May 04, 2010 at York. She was born in Sutton, NE on October 25, 1920 to John and Elizabeth (Serr) Nuss. She was baptized and confirmed in the Hope Reformed Church. She attended and graduated from Sutton High School in 1938. On October 6, 1940, Elsie and Glen Powers were united in marriage. They moved to Los Angeles, CA in 1941. One daughter, Sandra Kay, was born in Santa Monica, CA. In 1950 they returned to York, NE. Glen passed away in 1985.
Elsie was employed by the York Public School Food Service for 36 years, retiring in 1994 from Edison School. She was presented Life Membership to the P.T.A. Elsie was an active member in the First United Methodist Church in York, teaching Sunday School and serving on various committees. She also received her 50 year membership pin to the Methodist Church. Elsie spent many years as a Girl Scout leader and went on camping trips with the troop. She also helped with the Tele-Care program for fifth graders. She was active in the York Senior Center and supported the York General Hospital Auxiliary.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Sandra and her husband Douglas Gocke of Waco, NE; two grandchildren, Jeff Gocke and his wife Jill of York, NE and Jane and her husband Pete Walter of Ovid, CO; five great-grandchildren, Cameron and Adrienne Gocke of York, and Trey, Ethan, and Whitney Walter of Ovid. Also surviving are two sisters, Wilma Chesnut of Lincoln, and Bernice and her husband Russell Schelkopf of Sycamore, IL, and one sister-in-law Irene Nuss of Los Angeles, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Glen, five brothers, Harold, Arthur, Rudolph, Oscar and Victor, one sister Renie Hunsaker, and one sister-in-law Virginia Nuss.
Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 7, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, York, NE. Inurnment was in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the church.
