Gladys Piper

Gladys E. Piper age 86 of York, NE died Saturday, June 13, 2009 at York. She was born December 11, 1922 in rural Cordova, NE to Phillip and Emma (Johnsen) Hansen. Gladys was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York and enjoyed crocheting, playing cards with her friends, working crossword puzzles and putting puzzles together. She was also a member of the York Elk’s Club Auxiliary and the York Country Club. She was employed at Gerhardt’s Ice Cream Store for several years before working at Safeway and Grand Central Super Valu as well. Gladys had long suffered from the effects of Multiple Sclerosis from an early age. On July 5, 1945 she was married to Cecil Piper at Belleville, KS.

She is survived by her son Tim and his wife Cathy Piper of York. A grandson Josh and his wife Pam Piper of Fountain, CO and their son Weston Piper. Grandson Drew Piper of Savannah, GA. Also surviving is her sister Audrey Gray of Silver Creek, NE, a sister in law Dorothy Piper of York and a brother in law Art Ferguson of Monroe, NE. Several nieces and nephews as well. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant brother and sister and her three sisters Ruth, Mabel and Leona.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Jeff Wulf officiating. Burial will take place in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the donor’s favorite charity. Visitation begins after 5:00 pm Monday evening with the family greeting friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the mortuary.
