Merlin Petersen

Merlin Henry Petersen age 87 of York, NE died Friday, March 11, 2011 at Lincoln, NE. He was born September 26, 1923 in rural York County to Henry and Emma (Hansen) Petersen. He was raised on his family’s farm along with five brothers and two sisters near Cordova, NE. He attended Country School District 97 and served in the US Army in 1946. Merlin was a longtime member of the York Elk’s Lodge and the Danish Brotherhood. In 1942 he became involved in farming first with the Broadwell Corp and then later was employed by the Kaliff farms. He enjoyed farming, cattle, trucking, planting and harvesting.

He is survived by his sister Erma Hoffman of York and his brother Darwin and his wife Beverly Petersen also of York. Also surviving is his sister-in-laws Faye Petersen of York, Joyce Petersen of Utica and Eloise Petersen of Atlantic, IA. And a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Hanna Petersen, his brothers; Norval, Clayton, Willard and Maynard and his sister Alvera Cox and sister-in-law Fern Petersen.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm Monday, March 14, 2011 at the Metz Chapel in York with the Reverend Art Phillips officiating. Burial was in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
