Winifred Oglesby
Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend met her keeper on August 18th, 2009, at the age of 90. Winifred “Freddie” (Lichtenberger) Oglesby was born July 7th , 1919 in Bradshaw, Nebraska to Josiah “Joe” and Marie Johanna (Enderle) Lichtenberger.
Freddie graduated from York High School in 1936, attended Kearney State Teachers College and returned to teach in a one room schoolhouse in rural Bradshaw. On June 1st, 1941 she married Rolland E. Oglesby at Hampton, Nebraska. To that union, two daughters were born, Sandra and Billie.
Freddie opened “The Yardstick” in 1952 and later known as “Freddies Fabrics” in Grand Island and York for 35 years. Freddie was one of the first successful business women in York and Central Nebraska. The fabric store was the first exclusive fabric store in Nebraska. Freddie was an active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of York, where she served on the church council and was nominated first woman president of the council and sewed many quilts in the sewing guild.
Freddie was the first female member of the York Ambassadors and first female president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1983. She was Yorkfest Queen in 1986 and named Ambassador of the year and received the Chambers Outstanding Service Award. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Freddie was involved in the Crimestoppers Committee, Rotary Club, Retired Teacher’s Assoc., York General Hospital Auxiliary, and many community improvement projects. One of Freddie’s greatest joys in life was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Sandra and husband Charles Hall of Houston, TX and Billie and husband Roger Petersen of Waco, NE; grandchildren: Charles and wife Mary Hall and great granddaughter Rachel of Coppell, TX, Belinda Hall of Houston, TX, Freddie and husband Trevor Holman and great grandchildren Zoe Marie and Lance Christian of Tomball, TX, Ross Petersen and great grand children Alexxys Kay and Roger Allen of York, and Staci and husband Jason Naber and great grandchildren Courtney Ross and Alyssa Rae of York. Also surviving is one sister –in-law Lucille (Hutsell) Foote, many nieces, nephews, friends, and a very special, life-long friend Robert Spore of York.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin sisters Jean Stacy and Jane Hendricks, brother Alan Lichtenberger, and sister Josephine Smith.
Great appreciation and gratitude is extended to the Mahoney House and Tabitha Hospice Care of York for their loving care.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 A.M., Saturday August 22, 2009 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York with the Reverend Terry Cosier officiating.
2:00 P.M. Burial will be held at Plainfield Cemetery, west of Bradshaw, for family and friends. Memorials may be directed to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1-9pm, Friday 9am-9pm, with family greeting friends from 6-8 pm on Friday evening.
