On March 18, 2016, Melvin “Dean” Nickels, surrounded by his wife and children, entered into his heavenly home after a long fought battle with cancer.
Dean was born on January 9, 1937 in York. Nebraska. He was the youngest son born to Roy Lee and Stella Mae Nickels of Bradshaw, NE. Dean was married to his high school sweetheart Patricia Ann Piper of Benedict on June 12, 1955. She preceded him in death on March 3, 2003. Dean then married lifelong friend Connie Jones-Haggadone of York on June 4, 2004.
Dean is survived by his wife Connie Nickels of York; children: Debra and Stephen Easley of Oklahoma, Michael and Susan Nickels of New Hampshire, Mitze and Mike Rethwisch of York, Randy and Anita Nickels of Colorado, and James “Jay” Nickels of California; step-children: Shawn Haggadone of Denton, NE, Marc & Cindy Haggadone of York, and Brett & Trina Haggadone of Colorado.
Grandchildren include: Debbie-Ann Nellessen, Stephenie Easley, Robert, Christopher, Brandy, Angel, Sean, Anthony, and Alexis Nickels, Ashley and Jonathan Johnson, Matt and Amber Leinen, Doug, Bree and Blake Rethwisch, Emilee, Matthew, Lauryn, Garrett, Alynna, Gavin, and Breece Haggadone; great-grandchildren: Ryan and Cory Nellessen, Mickey and Henry Easley, Blain and Tyler Nickels, Lily Grondin, Jadeyn, Kamrien, and Piper Johnson, Brandon and McKenzie “Leinen” Scheiding, Lillian, Cora, Turner, and Liam Rethwisch.
Dean is also survived by his father-in-law Gale Jones and beloved pets, Charrla and Khloe, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Preceding Dean in death were parents; wife Patricia Nickels; son Robert Nickels; grandsons, baby Dean Black, Jason Easley, Brandon Nickels, and Nicholas Leinen; great-grandson Bentley Rethwisch; brothers and sisters, Dale Lee Nickels, Nora Thompson, Leroy Nickels, and Helen “Cookie” Rathjen.
Dean was employed by Champion Home Builders for forty-four and ˝ years retiring in 2004. He was currently working at Scott Hourigan Company of York. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and was baptized in March of 2015.
A Celebration of Dean’s Life was held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 26, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in York.
