Monnie Moomey

Monnie Eugeania “Jeanne” Moomey age 89 of York, NE, passed away Monday, September 13, 2010 at York, NE. She was born on July 17, 1921 at Danville, VA to Charles and Ruth (Hopkins) Hurst. After receiving her nursing degree, Jeanne enlisted in the U.S. Army where she served in the European Theater of WWII. During that time she met and married Elton F. Moomey on July 16, 1945 in Paris, France. Upon their discharge, they made their home in York where Jeanne resumed her nursing career. She was the Head Surgical Nurse at York General Hospital from1956 until 1984. Six of those years were at Henderson Community Hospital as the Director of Nursing. Jeanne was a member of the Baptist Congregational Church in York, PEO, Eastern Star, and the China Painting Club.

She is survived by son Jack (Carol) Moomey of Evans GA; daughter Wendy Moomey of York; grandson Jeff Moomey and his children Cody and Anna of Evans, GA; granddaughter Heather Moomey and her daughter Katie of Evans, GA; brother Bennie (Barbara) Hurst of White Plains, MD; and sister Ceceilia (Stan) Farmer of Richmond, VA. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband in 1999, five brothers, and one sister.

Funeral services were Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Baptist Congregational Church in York with Leroy Hoyer officiating. Burial followed in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Shriners Hospital or the church.
