Kenneth Miller
Kenneth D. Miller age 84 of Lincoln, NE formerly of Benedict, NE died Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Lincoln. He was born April 2, 1924 at the family farm near Benedict to Evan and Vera (Robertson) Miller. Kenneth was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Benedict where he had been a lifelong member and served many terms as a Council member and Sunday school teacher. He graduated from Benedict New 3 Consolidated schools in 1941 and was an active member of the basketball teams. He attended Boys State in Lincoln in 1940 and then following graduation he attended the University of Nebraska for a short period of time before returning to the family farm.
On September 3, 1950 Kenneth married Doris Smith at York, NE.
In 1942 Kenneth received a certificate of merit from the 4-H Victory and Food Producers. He also served on the Benedict School Board for 12 years and in 1971 he and his parents received the Annual Nebraska Association of Soil and Water Conservation Award. Kenneth also served on the York County Extension Board for several years. As a member of the Nebraska Crop Improvement Association, he received many awards for the raising of certified seed and was recognized for 30 years of membership in the Association in 1993. He raised registered Shorthorn cattle and was a member of the Nebraska Shorthorn Cattle Association and the York County Cattleman’s Association and received their 43rd Annual Award in 1991.
Following his retirement from the farm in 2000 he and Doris moved to Lincoln to be near their family. Kenneth battled Parkinson’s disease for the past 5 years and has been a resident of Holmes Lake Manor for the past 3 years.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris of Lincoln, two daughters Paula Miller of Overland Park, KS and Terri and her husband Howard Ragsdale of Scottsdale, AZ;. grandchildren, Chad and his wife Suzanne Lehr of Lincoln and Angie and her husband Scott Soucie of Sioux Falls, S.D; great grandchildren, Brittni and Ashlee Lehr of Lincoln; step-great granddaughter Tausha Soucie of Lincoln; step- grandchildren Brian Ragsdale of San Diego, CA and Joe and his wife Melissa (Ragsdale) Karrer from Lexington, Kentucky; step great grandson Jacob Karrer also from Lexington. He is also survived by his brothers Hollis Miller of York and E. Eugene and his wife Phyllis Miller of Grand Island. Nephews and nieces include Clark, Lynne and Dan Miller and several cousins and many lifelong friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law Lenore Miller.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 am Monday, May 19, 2008 at the Metz Chapel in York with LeRoy Hoyer officiating with burial in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to family at Metz Mortuary for later designation.
