William G. “Bill” McGaffin

William G. “Bill” McGaffin, 85 of York, died Sunday, April 18, 2004 in York. He was born May 24, 1918 at Bellwood, NE to George and Mary (Brown) McGaffin. Bill was a 1937 graduate of York High School and joined the National Guard in 1940 and served in the U.S Army during WWII with time in the European Theater. He was married in 1942 to Helen Snyder in King City, CA. They had one daughter, Sherry. In 1963 he married Martha (Barnes) Dietrich. Bill was a salesman for A.J. Dresden’s in York and own and operated Bills Liquors in York for 19 years. He retired from the York County Zoning Administration in 1983. He was a member of the V.F.W. #1609, York American Legion Bolton Post #19 and the York Elks Lodge #1024. Bill was also a past member of the York Drum and Bugle Corp.

He is survived by his wife Martha of York; daughter Sherry (Terry) Tonniges of Gresham; 2 grandchildren, Nicole (Scott) McLaughlin and Chad (Joy) Tonniges; great-grandchildren, Braxton, Lexi, Camryn and Riley; nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, 1 brother and 2 sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Metz Chapel in York. Military graveside services will be held at the Bellwood Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the Bellwood Cemetery Association.
