Donald Masters
Donald L. Masters, age 84 of York, died Sunday, May 15, 2005 at York. He was born on May 29, 1920 in Gretna, NE to Leroy & Fannie (McClay) Masters. He attended school in Arlington, NE where he excelled at track during high school. Don moved with his family to Lincoln in 1938. He married Glenadene Stevens in 1939 and three children were born to that union. Following his involvement in the Citizens Conservation Corp, Don served in the U.S. Army from July of 1944 – July of 1946. He achieved the rank of sergeant. After his discharge from the Army, Don worked as a crew foreman for the railroad. In 1948 he began his own construction business which lasted 25 years. In the early 1970’s he got out of the construction business and went to work for the State of Nebraska. He retired in December of 1991.
Don met Dorothy Stevens at a dance in Lincoln in January of 1991 and they were married July 9, 1991. They made their home in York until his death. During his years in York he had a lawn mowing service in the summer and he and Dorothy spent winters in the Rio Grande Valley. His interests included fishing, bowling, dancing & football. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York and the York American Legion Club until it’s closing.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy of York; sons Robert (Janet) Masters of Lincoln and Dan Masters of Burleson, TX; daughter, Beverly Zastrow of Lincoln; step-son, Joel (April) Stevens of Stromsburg; step-daughter, Becky (Jim) Green of Bradshaw; grandchildren, Tammy (Rob) Bengtson of Lincoln, Andy Masters of Findlay, Ohio, Matthew (Lauren) Masters of Waco, TX, and Randy (Addie) Zastrow, Terry Zastrow, Tracy (Heather) Zastrow all of Lincoln; step-grandchildren, Jeff (Jami) Stevens of Longmont, CO, Ross Stevens of Stromsburg and Jesse Richards of York. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and a sister.
Memorial services were Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Jeff Wulf officiating. Inurnment was in the Arborville Cemetery near Polk, NE.
