Irene Lewis

Irene A. Lewis, age 86 of Stromsburg, NE, formerly of York, NE, died Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Stromsburg. She was born July 19, 1922 near Henderson, NE to John A. “Alex” and Sarah (Critel) Newton. Irene was a 1940 graduate of York High School and on October 1, 1942 was united in marriage to Frederick Lewis in Osceola, NE. She was a longtime member of the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York until its closing and currently a member of the First United Methodist Church. Irene devoted her life to her husband and family but also worked for a time as a nurse’s aid at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. She enjoyed baking, sewing and spending time with her family. Her great-grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Left to cherish Irene’s memory is a son, Richard (Sharon) Lewis of Loveland, CO; two daughters, Diane (Stanley) Moore of York and Deborah (Dale) Sloan of York; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Jack (Eileen) Newton of Milwaukee, OR and Billy (Janis) Morris of Ponca, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brother Calvin.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Metz Chapel with Jeff Wulf officiating. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery, York. Memorials may be directed to the Nebraska Children’s Home, Epworth Village Shoe Foundation or family choice.
