Vern Hurlbut

Vern Alva Hurlbut age 86 of York, NE died Saturday, May 28, 2005 at Lincoln. He was born September 24, 1918 in rural York County to Myron and Maude (Marsh) Hurlbut and was a lifelong member of he East Avenue United Methodist Church in York. A World War II veteran Vern served as an automobile mechanic with the 340th Engineer Construction Battalion of Asiatic – Pacific Theater of Operations. After the war Vern was employed for a time by the Ells Oil Company in York. He was then a salesman and distributor for the Curtis Candy Company for 10 years before joining the Frito Lay Company for 21 yrs prior to his retirement. Vern was member of the York American Legion Bolton Post #19, was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His family and friends will miss his funny sense of humor. On June 7, 1941 he was married to Maxine Janes at Buffalo, N.Y. He is survived by his wife Maxine of York, one son Dennis and his wife Tammy Hurlbut of Lincoln, one daughter Sharon and her husband Steve Hollander of Sumner, NE. His grandchildren Sarah and her husband Clinton Brill of Kearney, Sheila and her husband Mike Broderson of Omaha, Stuart and his wife Heather Hollander of Cozad and Joshua Hurlbut of Lincoln. Also surviving are two great grandchildren, Olivia Broderson of Omaha and Dalton Hollander of Cozad. One sister Jean and her husband George Garrett of Mesa Arizona. Other local relatives include two nephews, Jerry and his wife Maxine Hurlbut and Charles and his wife Jan Hurlbut all of York. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Ray and Russ, and a twin sister Vera Fowler.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 2, 2005at the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York with the Rev. Michael Laing officiating with burial in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the East Avenue United Methodist Church in York.
