Sybil Hulme

Sybil Worthington Hulme, age 96, of Sunnyvale, California, formerly of York County, Nebraska, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 31, 2011. Sybil was born on November 14, 1914, on the family farm in Arborville Township, York County, Nebraska, the 3rd child and only daughter of Theodore D. and Elizabeth (Bingham) Otte. Sybil graduated from York High School in May, 1931 and was elected to the National Honor Society. She then became a school teacher at a one room school house.

During WWII, Sybil worked at the bomber plant in Omaha run by Glen L Martin Co. It was work she enjoyed very much and where she met her husband. On January 29, 1944, she married Thomas Hulme in Omaha, Nebraska and they lived in Bellevue, Nebraska. Later they moved to York where Tommy was the manager of the York Municipal Airport. In 1962 she moved to Boulder, Colorado where she worked at the University of Colorado until retirement. After retirement she moved to Sunnyvale, California to be near her daughter and grandchildren.

Sybil’s favorite thing to do was to spend time with family. Her hobbies were crocheting (she was known for her tablecloths and afghans), crossword puzzles, gardening, and traveling.

Sybil is survived by her daughter JoAnn and son-in-law Barry Schwartz of Los Altos, California and their children Stephanie and David; stepson Tom Hulme of Tempe, Arizona; sister-in-law Ardell Otte of Omaha, Nebraska and numerous nieces, nephews, step grandchildren, step great grandchildren, and step great great grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Tommy; daughters Elizabeth and Karen; three brothers, Frank, George, and Ted; and three stepchildren, Irene, Leonard, and Ronald. Each of these was treasured more than they may know.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 15, 2011 at the Arborville Congregational Church near Polk, NE. Interment followed at the Arborville Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
