Rolland Hughes
Rolland “Rollie” E. Hughes, age 80 of York, NE, went to be with his beloved wife Marie and two sons Don and Richard in the arms and protection of God, Tuesday, March 24, 2009. He was born December 22, 1928 to R.L. and Ida (Schollmeyer) Hughes in Lynch, NE where he grew up on a farm. He attended school in Inman, NE and graduated in 1946.
He was drafted in 1951 and served until 1953 as a member of the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. After the service he attended Norfolk Junior College on the G.I. bill and then the University of Nebraska Lincoln and graduated with a BA in Agriculture. He joined the Northrup King Company and worked as a research agronomist from 1959 to his retirement in 1993.
On October 23, 1959, Rolllie was united in marriage to Marie Duncan in Holdrege, NE. To his already made family of Don and Linda they had three more boys: Richard, Marlin, and Michael. They resided in Norfolk from 1961 to 1967, moving to York, NE. He was transferred to TX from 1986 to 1989 and returned to York, where he lived until his death.
He loved working with the soil and making things grow. He was a member of the ARC, Elks, Boy Scouts of America, Red Cross, and the Lion’s Club, serving in any way possible to be of help.
Survivors include his daughter Linda (Dave) Troutman of York; two sons Marlin (Tokiko) Hughes of Nijyo Fukuoka, Japan and Michael (Becky) Hughes of Loveland, CO; grandchildren: Gene (Janelle) Troutman and their children Jordan and Rachel of York, Dee Magnussen and her children Alex and Andi of York, Aika Mishel Hughes of Japan, Tess and Breana Hughes of Loveland, CO, Andrea Duncan and her family of Beatrice, NE, and Shane (Robyn) Duncan of Tennessee; brother Rodrick (Shirley) Hughes of Norfolk, NE; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in York with the Reverend Mike Eickhoff officiating. Military burial will follow at York’s Greenwood Cemetery. A luncheon will be served at the church following the burial. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., Sunday at the mortuary with the family greeting friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m.
The family is requesting in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the family for later designation.
