Miles Hildebrand
Miles J. Hildebrand, longtime York pharmacist, died Sunday, January 14, 2007 at York. Miles was born in York on June 30, 1920 to Charles P. and Mabel (Doran) Hildebrand. He graduated from York High School in 1938. He received a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nebraska in 1943 and a BS in Pharmacy (with High Distinction) in 1951. He was a member of Sigma Tau honorary engineering fraternity, Rho Chi honorary pharmacy fraternity and Delta Upsilon social fraternity.
On May 30, 1943, Miles was married to Mildred L. (Peg) Kaliff also of York. He is survived by Peg, his wife of 63 years, along with their three sons. John (Ginny) of Mesa, AZ, Miles J. Jr. (Chris) of El Cajon, CA, and Dan (Barb) of York. Miles is also survived by eight grandchildren and his brother Robert (Jan) of Ames, IA. His parents and three brothers preceded him in death.
Long active in the York community, Miles and Peg owned and operated a pharmacy in York for over 40 years. He was a past president of the York Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the chamber Ambassadors club. Miles was a member of the board of directors of York General Hospital for 34 years. He served on the York City Council and was a member of the York Planning Commission. He served on and was a past president of the York Board of Education.
Miles was a former member of the Greenwood Cemetery board and received the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor award. He was also a past YorkFest king. He served on the Nebraska Pharmacists Association board of directors and was chosen by that organization to receive the Bowl of Hygeia award for outstanding community service.
Miles was a longtime member of the York Sertoma Club and was a 49-year member of the American Legion. He served four years in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Captain, and served two years in the European Theater in World War II.
Miles was a longtime member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of York.
Memorial services were held at the First Presbyterian Church of York, 414 Delaware Ave., at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 19th with the Reverend Mike Eickhoff officiating. No visitation. In lieu of flowers, Miles requested that memorials be directed to the Presbyterian Memorial Foundation, the York General Hospital Wellness Department or to the donor’s choice.
