Gary Hiett

Gary L.“Buzz” Hiett, age 67 of York, NE, formerly of Thayer, NE, died Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Lincoln, NE. He was born April 25, 1941 at York, to Ivan and Genevieve (Cartwright) Hiett. Buzz was a 1959 graduate of York High School where he excelled at football, basketball and track. In his younger years he enjoyed swimming and roller skating. He formerly worked as a foreman at Sunflower Beef Packers in York and also worked at Kroy Industries in York. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Thayer. He loved going to the horse races, casinos, and going to Cornhusker football games. He was well known as being an excellent shoot in both pool and hunting, Buzz was united in marriage to Sharon A. Sackschewsky at Thayer on May 12, 1963. Above all, he cherished his family and enjoyed spending time with them.

He is survived by his daughter Holly and her husband Todd Tonniges of Thayer. His grandchildren include Genevieve Tonniges of Thayer, Shasta Tonniges of Thayer; three step grandchildren, Matthew Tonniges of Ravenna, NE, Lucas Tonniges of Houston, TX and Elizabeth Tonniges of Ravenna. Also surviving is a brother Harold “Punk” (Sharon) Hiett of York and sister, Wilma “Sis” (John) Bachelor also of York. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sharon, infant sister and a niece Tory Sackschewsky

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 20, 2009 at the Zion Lutheran Church at Thayer with the Reverend Lee Seetin officiating. Burial followed in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Thayer. Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church.
