Dorothy Heiden

Dorothy Lucille (Gloystein) Heiden of Waco, NE died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Seward Memorial Hospital in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 77 years, 1 month, and 23 days. She was born to George and Amalia (Naber) Gloystein on December 19, 1933, the youngest of four children and raised on a farm north of Waco, and later northeast of Utica, Nebraska. She was baptized January 14, 1934 and confirmed March 30, 1947. She attended grade school in Utica and graduated from Utica High School. She was united in marriage to Gerald Victor Heiden on April 18, 1954 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Utica.

In addition to being a housewife and mother, she was custodian at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Waco for 40 years. Along with helping her husband on the farm, she raised chickens, helped with school cleaning and mowing the cemetery. For many years, Dorothy was actively involved with Thrivent/AAL and coordinated countless fund-raising events. She was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed quilting, and helped make numerous blankets for Lutheran World Relief. She took great pride in making a quilt for each grandchild. She was a wonderful cook and was well known for her cinnamon rolls and homemade buns.

Dorothy is survived by her five children and their families:

Son Mark (Stephanie) Heiden of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Erica (Tony Wilson) Heiden and great grandchildren Austyn and Ashyr Heiden of Lincoln, NE; Erin (Jesse) Hartig of Sioux Falls; and Jared Heiden of Vermillion, SD.

Daughter Marsha (Terry) Barth of Beaver Crossing, NE; grandchildren: Shana (Randy) Schultz and great grandchildren Kaelan and Hallie of Hastings, NE; Lori Wambold and great granddaughter Ella of Lincoln; Chelsea (Brad) Luce of Hastings; Michelle (Matt) Bennett and great grandchildren Zach, Danielle, Noah, Elianna, and Brielle of Lincoln; and Dawn (Kevin) Standage and great grandchildren Claire, Layton, and Owen of Ravenna, NE.

Son Gordon (Diana) Heiden of Waco; grandchildren: Lori Heiden and great grandchildren Emily Friesen, Bryson and Tyson Hornbacher of Waco; Lisa (Wes) Rhodes of Gresham, NE; and Paul Heiden of Waco.

Son PJ Heiden and grandchildren: Katerina Montgomery, Mollie and Elijah Heiden all of Tempe, AZ.

Daughter Valerie (Dave) Doherty and grandchildren Libby and Kate Doherty all of Phoenix, AZ.

She is also survived by her three brothers: Marvin, Lawrence, and Hubert Gloystein all of Utica.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Gerald, son-in-law Trent Wambold, grandson Mitch Wambold, and great-grandson Jaxson Hornbacher, and three sisters-in-law: Eileen, Eleanor, and Ruth Gloystein.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday February 16, 2011 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Waco with the Reverend Paul Kern officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Cemetery Fund.
