Sam A. Gibbs

Sam A. Gibbs, age 82, of York, died Saturday, May 17, 2003 at Lincoln. He was born to Sam A. Gibbs Sr. and Lorene (Harris) Gibbs on August 30, 1920 at Wyandotte, OK. He joined the 18th Field Artillery and later transferred to the Air force’s 54th Fighter Squadron as an aircraft mechanic. Sam served in the Aleutian Islands, where his unit supported the infantry in the battle for Attu. Sam retired from the Air Force in 1948 after 81/2 years of service. Sam was married to Norma McCune in 1947 in Washington, D.C. To this union was born 4 children: Peggy L. Gibbs, Robert Gibbs, Karen (Hollis) Stuhr and James Gibbs. He was employed by the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service at Clay Center, NE in 1955, transferring to the Seward office as Chief Clerk in 1957, and in 1960 was named Office Manager at York where he served until his retirement in 1979. He then joined the Fillman Insurance Agency. Sam enjoyed raising animals, square dancing, camping and travel. His family, friends and church were his greatest enjoyment. He is survived by his wife, children, 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Arbor Drive Baptist Church in York with the Rev. Keith Bateman. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery at York with military honors. Visitation will be Sunday from 1-9 p.m. at Metz Mortuary in York and Monday from 9 am to 9 pm with family greeting friends from 5-7 pm
