Donald Geery
Donald L. Geery of York passed away Thursday, April 16, 2009 in the Genoa Medical Facilities, Genoa, NE. Don was born April 28, 1924 in Harvey, Iowa. He became a York, NE resident in 1946 following the end of World War II. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1946, spending a portion of that time stationed at Fairmont Air Base in Fairmont, NE.
He was preceded in death by Lavonne, his wife of 61 years, infant son Donald L. Geery Jr., son Timmy L. Gerry, his parents, three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by sons Michael D. Geery of Columbus, NE and Mark Geery of Pine City, MN; sister Edna May (Geery) Conger of Rock Island, IL; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother-in-law Robert J. Wilson of Columbus, NE; sister-in-law Marjorie (Wilson) Nail of Two Inlets, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
Don was known to many in and around York as “Mr. Baseball,” having been a player and manager of semi-pro ball, in and around the York area for many years. Following his playing days, he managed York Legion ball and was a driving force in organizing York Youth Baseball.
Don was also active in the Platte Valley Office of Mental Retardation and the Platte County ARC. He was a member of the American Legion, Elks and Masonic Lodge and the York United Brethren Church. He retired from Nebraska Public Power District in York following 37 years of service in York, Columbus and Lincoln.
Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the Greenwood Cemetery, York, NE. Memorials may be directed to the attention of Shelli Cornwell, Administrator of the Genoa Medical Facilities, P.O. Box 310, Genoa, NE 68640.
