Barbara Furst

Barbara May Furst age 89 of York, NE, died on Sunday, July 26th, at York General Hearthstone. Barbara was born Feb. 12, 1920, at Kalamazoo, MI, to Henry and Arloa (Burkle) Manning. She married Lyle W. Furst in Lincoln, NE, on June 20, 1942. They had three daughters (Jackie, Joyce, & Judy) and a foster son (Ardon). They invited two foreign exchange students into their home (Anita from England and Yoshi from Japan) and a Pakistani man (Asad). They had 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Barbara was very active in her church and community. She was a faithful member of the 1st United Methodist Church in York for over 60 years. (Choir Director, United Methodist Women’s group President several times, as well as holding other offices.) Barbara was a member of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution, NE Federation of Women’s Clubs: District IV, York General Hospital & Hearthstone Auxiliary. She and her husband were strong supporters of York College. For her community support and efforts she received the following award/honors: 1982 Yorkfest Queen, KOLN-KLIN Sunshine Award, & Knights of AK-SAR-BEN Good Neighbor Citation. Barbara always enjoyed music and was involved in choruses & musicals in high school, even singing at Carnegie Hall with the UN-L chorus. She gave private voice lessons, started the vocal group “Mother Singers” in York, and participated in York’s Community Choruses as well. Barbara sang with residents of Hearthstone twice a week for 30 years.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lyle W. Furst, her parents, Henry & Arloa Manning, Lorena Manning, her step-mother, and her grandson, Chad Frisbie. Survivors include: Jackie (& Leonard) Beebe of Los Alamos, NM, Joyce (& Noel) Frisbie of Bradshaw, NE, Judy (& Jerry) Leigh of Lincoln, NE, Ardon (& Karolyn) Anderson of York, NE, ten grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held at the 1st United Church in York, NE, on Tuesday, July 28th, at 2:00 pm. It was Barbara’s wish to be cremated so there will be no viewing or visitation. Private family inurnment at a later time. In lieu of flowers, please give memorials to the 1st United Methodist Church of York, York General Hospital & Hearthstone Auxiliary, or York College.
