Ruth Foster
Ruth B. Foster, age 89, died in Lincoln Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006. She was born in York on July 11, 1917 to the Rev. Otto P. (Bertha Behnke) Batz. She was baptized on July 22, 1917 and confirmed in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church on May 17, 1931. She was educated in the York Public Schools and graduated in June 1935. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated in June 1939 with a B.S. degree with majors in math and German and a minor in European history.
She was married on Sept. 2, 1939 to A. Hubert (Hub) Foster of York.
She taught Sunday School at Emmanuel Lutheran's teenage class for many years. She prepared and presented Bible lessons for the Dorcas Quilting Guild and the Ruth Circle. She served as a Greenwood Cemetery board member for 25 years. Ruth was an active member of the York Garden Club.
She was a lifelong homemaker, devoted to her children and grandchildren. Her hobbies included gardening and she was well known for her flowers, particularly lilies, roses, daylilies and peonies. She enjoyed swimming, reading, playing bridge and traveling with her husband on York Fun Club trips. Hawaii was her favorite destination.
Ruth is survived by her husband, Hubert of York; one daughter, Jane (Loren) Thompson of York; two sons, Dr. William P. (Sandra) Foster of Norfolk and Richard T. Foster of York; four grandchildren: Dr. Michael (Michele) Thompson of Elkhorn, Stephen (Heather) Thompson of York and Lincoln, Quinn (Doug) Hollister of Denver, Colo., and Benjamin (Jill) Foster of Loveland, Colo., and seven great-grandchildren: Jackson, Sawyer and Caroline Thompson of Elkhorn, Samuel and Alana Foster of Loveland and Camille and Max Hollister of Denver and one sister, Gertrude Rogers of Omaha.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, James Hubert; her parents; one brother, Gerhard Batz and two sisters, Adelaide Drake and Hildegarde Zeilinger.
Funeral services were held Dec. 11, 2006 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Tim Marshall presiding. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery at York.
Memorials are suggested to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, York General Hearthstone or the Orphan Grain Train of Norfolk.
