Evelyn M. Folts

Evelyn Maxine Folts, former York County Clerk, died Monday, November 18, 2008 at Fairmont, NE at the age of 88. She was born June 12, 1920 in rural York, NE to Joseph C. and Mary R. (Foster) Hemberry. Evelyn graduated from York High School in the class of 1938. Following graduation, she worked for several prominent families in Hastings, NE. Returning to York, she was united in marriage to Glenn Folts on September 14, 1940. In the early years of their marriage, they lived on farms south of York, where Evelyn was active in both County Extension and 4-H clubs. During this time, she also worked at Trofholz Bakery. Following a move to York in 1958, Evelyn worked at the IOOF Lodge Office and the York Credit Bureau before she joined the staff in the York County Clerk’s Office in 1960, which marked the beginning of a 25-year career there. Evelyn was appointed Deputy Clerk in 1961 and was elected as the York County Clerk in 1970, an office that she held for 15 years before retiring in 1985. While at the Clerk’s Office, Evelyn was active in the Credit Women’s Breakfast Club, holding a variety of offices including president. She was also a past member of the Nebraska County Officials Association. After retirement, she enjoyed travel, volunteering for her church and spending time with friends and family. Evelyn was an active member of the First Christian Church in York for all of her adult life and was active in the Rebecca Circle. She will be remembered most as a storyteller and as a loving caregiver to several generations of family.

Left to cherish her memory are children: Glenda (James) Jacobsen of McCool Jct., NE, Dianne (Lee) Gray of Rochester, MN, daughter-in-law Janet (Ron) Tonniges of Utica, NE; grandchildren: Jeff Folts of Omaha, NE, Randy (Kathy) Folts of Omaha, NE, Angela (Joe) Oberle of York, James (Irma) Jacobsen of Lincoln, NE, Jill Weinberger of Madison, NE, Jared (Rachael) Jacobsen of York, Justin Jacobsen of McCool Jct., Leanne (Dan) Knott of Red Wing, MN, and Shelley (Tracy) Paulson of Buffalo, MN. Also surviving are great-grandchildren: Rachael, Layton, Madison, Chelsea, Cordyn, Isaiah, Noah, Carter, Tyler, Austin, and Grant. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Glenn, son Norman, and sister Irene MaCoy.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 21, 2008 at the First Christian Church, York, NE, with the Reverend Ron Johnson officiating. Burial followed in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church, Fairview Manor or Aseracare Hospice.
