Edwin Doremus
Edwin W. Doremus age 83 of Benedict, NE died Sunday, October 1, 2006 at Lincoln.
He was born November 11, 1922 at Benedict, NE to Wilbur L and Edith (Swedenburg) Doremus and graduated from Benedict High School in 1941. Edwin was a longtime Benedict area farmer and a member of the United Methodist Church at Benedict. He was a World War II veteran serving in the southern Philippines theatre in Okinawa where he earned two Purple Heart medals. A member of the International Order of Odd Fellows he also belonged to the Polk American Legion Post, enjoyed collecting ‘red’ antique tractors, woodworking and playing with his grandchildren. He also worked for the Civil Conservation Corp from 1941 to 1942.
On October 27, 1946 he was married to Ethel L. Catlett at Central City, NE.
He is survived by his wife Ethel of Benedict, two sons, Robert and his wife Theresa Doremus of Polk and David and his wife Mary Doremus of Benedict. Two daughters, Patty and her husband Ross Hirschfeld of Benedict, and Cinda Hild of York.
Nine Grandchildren, Kimberly and her husband Tuff Cotton of Oshkosh, NE, Melanie Hild of Dayton, OH, Zuleika Doremus of Lincoln, Chad and his wife Misty Hirschfeld of Benedict, Jason and his wife Jennifer Hirschfeld of York, Daniel Doremus of Benedict, Christine Doremus of Wallace, NE, Nathan and his wife Amy Doremus of Benedict and Ryan Doremus of Polk.
Great Grandchildren include, Derek, Erin and Allison Hild all of Aurora, NE, and Sophie Hild of Dayton, OH. Creighton and Atleigh Hirschfeld both of Benedict, Chase and Addison Cotton both of Oshkosh, Brynn and Reese Hirschfeld both of York.
Also surviving is a brother Fred and his wife Marge Holmquist of Denver, Co and a sister Sherry and her husband Dale Reetz of York. Sisters-in-law Dee Newman, Rose Catlett, Levia and her husband Eldon Maxson all of Central City, Marilyn Catlett of Broken Bow, NE and Avis and her husband Paul Fusby of Stromsburg, NE.
Many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, three sisters and a grandson.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 5, 2006 at the First United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Dan Spearow officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Benedict. Memorials may be directed to the family.
