Arlois Diers

Arlois Nelle Diers age 84 of York, NE died Saturday, January 13, 2007 at York. She was born to George L. and Bessie R.(Beebe) Irland near Osceola on June 21, 1922. She attended Victor school in Polk County until the 10th grade then lived with her grandmother Rosa Beebe in Shelby to attend 11th and 12th grades. (Her parents provided butter, meat and eggs to her grandmother in exchange for her room and board.) She graduated from Shelby High School in 1940. She took normal training classes at Midland College in Fremont. She also took classes at York College. Arlois taught grades 1-8 at Hackberry School District in Polk County until she married.

On April 17, 1944, in York, she was wed to Arthur F. Nelson. To this union were born two children, Lynda Kaye and Arthur Freeman Jr.. On December 28, 1947, Art Nelson died as a result of injuries received in a motor vehicle accident. On September 11, 1949, she married Richard H. Diers at the Presbyterian Church in Gresham Nebraska. This union was blessed with two children Cynthia Bess and Richard Allen. Dick and Arlois celebrated 57 years of marriage.

Arlois was a long time resident of Gresham, Nebraska where she was active in the Gresham American Legion Auxiliary, the Gresham Presbyterian church, the Community Club. She was a 4 H leader, cub scout leader and Sunday School teacher. She was co-owner of the Diers Grocery store in Gresham until 1971. She then worked at Seward Memorial Hospital as a Medicare clerk until her retirement. She enjoyed playing bridge, bowling, dancing, traveling and the many friends that crossed her path. She was an avid sports fan and followed her children’s as well as her grandchildren’s sport activities. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Gresham, Nebraska for over 58 years.

She leaves to mourn, her husband Richard of York, her children, Lynda (Tim) Zieg of York, Cindy (Neil) Butzke of Seward, and Rich (Ann) Diers of Lincoln, grandchildren, Cary (Laura) Zieg of Lincoln, Nate, Ryan and Brent Butzke of Lincoln; and Jessica and Anthony Diers of Lincoln, her great grandchildren Alex and Ellie Zieg of Lincoln and many friends. Also a former Foreign Exchange student Roberto Andonie.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at the Presbyterian Church in Gresham with the Reverend Noel DeKalb officiating. Interment was in Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Gresham. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
