Warren Dickey
Warren R. Dickey age 85, of York, NE, died Monday, August 30, 2010 at the Hearthstone in York. He was born March 11, 1925 at Columbus, NE to Charley L. and Wilma (Houdersheldt) Dickey. He graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1943, leaving immediately for service with the Army in World War II. He served in Europe with the 70th Division and was honored with the Silver Star for gallantry in action and a Purple Heart.
He was a graduate of Doane College and received his Master’s Degree from the University of Nebraska. His life was spent in education, teaching in Harvard, Milligan, Fullerton and York where he worked for 22 years, first as High School Principal and then as High School Counselor. He worked for 40 years as a crop hail adjuster during the summer months.
He was married to Emma Jean Springer January 24, 1951 at Exeter, NE. They are the parents of a son and two daughters, the grandparents of eight and great grandparents of two.
Warren’s life was marked by devotion to his family and his job. He loved gardening. He taught many kids to ride bikes, play ping pong and to mow in a straight line. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in York.
Survivors include his wife Emma Jean of York, children, Leslie (Mark) Penner of Champaign, IL, Tom (Jacque) Dickey of Albion, NE, Janet ( Frank Burris) Dickey-Burris of Solon, IA, grandchildren, Ben (Sarah) Penner of Ann Arbor, MI, Jonathan (Lisa) Penner of Bloomington, IL, Daniel Penner of Portland, OR, Luke Penner of Champaign, IL, Erin Dickey of Chicago, IL, Laura (Derek) Kowalski of Norfolk, NE, Leslie (Jaime) Davila of Lincoln, NE, Mackenzie Burris of Ames, IA. Also surviving are brother, Charley L. (Martha) Dickey of Cheyenne, WY, sister, Marian (Allen) Hanner of Bellwood, NE, sister, Sandra Kniffin of Fountain Hills, AZ, brother-in-law Milo (Sylvia) Springer of Wickenburg, AZ, sister-in-law Carol (Gayle) Goering of Platte Center, NE.
Memorial services were held Thursday, September 2, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in York. Private family inurnment. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
