Angeline L. Darnall

Angeline L. Darnall, age 97 of York, died Monday, May 17th at York. She was born March 21, 1907 on a farm near Utica, NE to Lucian G. and M. Barbara (Gutbrodt) Learned and graduated from Utica High School in 1925. She was married to Oris N. Darnall of Utica on July 31, 1937 at the private home of her sister and husband, Mabel and Walter Heidbreder, east of York. They resided in Utica until the spring of 1942 when they moved to Long Beach, CA to work in the World War II shipbuilding yards. Following the war they continued to live in Long Beach where Oris was an auto mechanic. They retired for a few years in Apple Valley, CA, then returned to their home in Long Beach. No children were born of their marriage. While living in Long Beach, Angeline was active in the United Methodist Church. She also had a special love for music and poetry. Before her marriage, she was a popular local singer including performances at the Utica Opera House with her sister Mabel accompanying her at the piano. Until recently she was able, on a moments notice, to spontaneously recite verse after verse of her favorite poets. Oris died February 10, 1984 in Pasedena, CA and was buried in the Utica Cemetery. Angeline continued to reside in Long Beach until her health began to fail. She then moved to York in the spring of 1999 residing first in the Mahoney House and later at the Hearthstone.

Angeline is survived by a nephew, Walt Heidbreder and his wife Colleen of York; a niece, Betty Dunn and her husband Pat of Navasota, TX; two great nephews, Randy Learned of Eagle, NE and Douglas Learned of Lincoln, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Mabel; three brothers, Oscar, Warren and most recently, R.E. “Buzz” Learned as well as a nephew Darrell Learned.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 19 at the Metz Chapel in York with the Reverend Art Phillips officiating. Burial will be at the Utica Cemetery, Utica, NE. Memorials may be directed to the Hearthstone or Hospice Care of Nebraska. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday at the mortuary.
