Bette Conroy

Elizabeth A. (Bette) Conroy, age 79, of York, NE, died Monday, January 31, 2011 at York. She was born December 29, 1931, at Lomax, NE to A. Laurence and Lauretta (Neville) Conroy. Bette grew up on the family farm in Custer County and graduated from Oconto High School. Bette received higher education by committing to a religious congregation in Iowa. Later she attended the University of Nebraska where she earned her bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate. Upon graduation she taught school in Gresham, NE for a short time prior to moving to Long Beach, CA to pursue her life long career in teaching.

In 1989 Bette retired and returned to Nebraska to come back home. She lived in York with her sister Rose until Rose’s death in 2004. Bette stayed in York as it had become her home.

Survivors include her brothers, James (Grace) Conroy, Lincoln, NE and John (Gladys) Conroy, Oconto, NE; sisters-in-law, Betty Conroy, Oconto, NE and Alberta Conroy, Lincoln, NE. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers, Laurence, Paul and Louis; and sister Rose.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday February 4, 2011 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in York with the Reverend Monsignor James Reinert officiating. A Rosary service was said prior to the mass at 10:00 a.m. also at the church. Private family inurnment to be held at a later time in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Eddyville, NE. Memorials may be directed to St Joseph’s Catholic Church or to the school.
