James Christensen
Jim Christensen age 87, of Grand Island, NE formerly longtime resident of York, died, Friday, February 29, 2008 at Grand Island. He was born on September 15, 1920 at Wolbach, NE to Chris P. and Helen (Swanson) Christensen. Jim attended High School through the 9th grade and was proud to receive his Honorary High School Diploma in November of 2004. He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII and was united in marriage to Ila Snyder on February 3, 1940 at Grand Island, NE.
Jim was a USDA Meat Inspector for the York Pork Plant and Sunflower Beef Packers in York until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the East Hill Church of Christ in York. Jim was instrumental in starting the Little League Baseball Program in York and he played town ball throughout Nebraska for many years. He also coached Little League, Intermediate League and Midget Legion baseball. He was a past post commander for the American Legion for three terms, was active in the VFW, and served in the American Legion Honor Guard. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and working in his rose garden.
He is survived by two sons: James G. and his wife Jannette Christensen of Derby, KS and Larry D. Christensen of Irving, TX. Grandchildren include: Carrie Christensen of Baghdad Iraq; Trent Christensen of Derby, KS; Jonathan (Deepa) Christensen of Irving, TX; Allison Christensen of Kemp, TX.
Great-grandchildren: Cameron, Chloe and Calix Christensen of Derby, KS and Zoe Michelle Christensen of Irving, TX.
He is also survived by three brothers: Wendell Christensen of Kansas City, MO, Kenneth (Eleanor) Christensen of St. Paul, NE, and Willard (Marianne) Christensen of Omaha, NE; one sister Dorothy Powell of Kewane, IL, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death were his parents, wife and brother Robert.
Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the East Hill Church of Christ with Rick Eldred officiating.
Military graveside services followed at Greenwood Cemetery in York.
Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
