Matilda Magdalena Wulff Bruggeman
Matilda Magdalena Wulff Bruggeman died Monday, December 27, 2004 at the age of
101. She was born June 18, 1903 on a farm near Waco, Nebraska to Anton and Helena
Wulff. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church south of Waco.
Both of her parents died when she was quite young and she was raised by William and
Matilda Tieken of York, Nebraska. She married Elmer Bruggeman on October 10, 1926
at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, York Nebraska, where she was a member until her
death. Matilda and Elmer farmed southwest of York until their retirement when they
moved to York. Due to ill health she has lived at the Hearthstone for the last seven years.
She is survived by a son Dale and wife Kathy of Lincoln Nebraska, grandchildren
and spouses Ann and Barrie Luers of Beatrice Nebraska, Bob and Eileen Bruggeman of
Carmichael California, and Sue and Les Mach of Wahoo Nebraska, great-grandchildren are
Meghan, Kelsey, and Thomas Luers, Becky, Jacob, Elizabeth, and Lucas Mach, and
Addy Bruggeman, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her
husband Elmer, her parents, foster parents, and brothers John and Herman Wulff, sister
Anna Pieper, foster brother Herman Tieken, and foster sister Matilda Tieken.
Matilda was very involved in the family farming operation. She was a charter
member of the York County Fair Board where she served for over 25 years. At the
County Fair she was superintendent of the quilt and needlework department until her
health would no longer allow such activity. The many girls who were members of her 4-
H Clubs fondly remember her.
During her retirement years she volunteered at her church and York General
Hospital and spent many hours playing card with her friends. Each of her family has one
or more afghans which she crocheted. She had a passion for flowers and was noted for
the beautiful flowers she raised around her home.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Rev. Tim Marshall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hearthstone or the donors choice. There will be no visitation.
