Carmen Beaver
Carmen Mary Beaver age 78 of York, NE died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at York.
She was born January 5, 1930 on a farm near Utica, NE to Daniel J.and Minnie (Cuda) Sullivan. She attended country school northeast of Utica and graduated from Waco High School in 1947 as Salutatorian. After graduation, Carmen worked for the Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph office in York and when she was 20, she moved to Grand Island, NE to attend Business College. She was united in marriage to Gerald Beaver on December 28, 1957 in a double wedding at Utica along with her sister Dorothy and Daniel Kirkpatrick.
In 1969, Carmen, her sister Dorothy, and Kay Breiner were the co-owners and operators of the Melody Lane Nursery School in the basement of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in York for about five years. Later she worked as an aid at York Middle School and as a school secretary at Willard School. Over the years she has also worked for Larkin Insurance Agency and Service Master Clean in York.
Carmen was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in York. She enjoyed traveling, bowling, and softball. In 1970, she was instrumental in forming the York Saint’s Softball Team, which she coached for twelve years. The York Saints won the Nebraska State Softball tournament and earned the right to play in the national tournament in Las Cruses, NM, where they finished in 5th place. Carmen actively attended her grandchildren’s sporting events and school functions. She was also an avid Nebraska Husker fan. Carmen loved Christmas and the tradition of hanging the Christmas stockings on her front porch has been a family tradition for 30 years. Above all, Carmen was a kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother and will be missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by two sons, Michael and his wife Kris Beaver of York and Steven Beaver of Lincoln; five daughters, Jane and her husband Keith Johnson of Yorktown, VA, Jean and her husband Tim Gardner of York, Mary Beaver of Columbus, Diane Swanson of Plano, TX, Julie and her husband Rob Warren of Omaha and Kathy and her husband Neal Carson of Ord; grandchildren, Katie Johnson and Shawn Johnson of Yorktown, VA, Kylee Gardner and Bret Gardner of York, Sara Warren and Matt Warren of Omaha, JaNae Beaver of Lincoln, Carlee Beaver of York and Zach Beaver of York, Nicki Carson, Andrea Carson and Ashley Carson of Ord; sister Dorothy and her husband Dan Kirkpatrick of York, brother Daniel and his wife Elsie Sullivan of Waco and brother Jim Sullivan of Waco; brother & sisters in law, Wanda Sullivan and Rita Sullivan of York, Ninette Beaver of Sun City, AZ and Ernie Kozisek of Grand Island. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald, sister Dee Kozisek, brothers Ray and Robert Sullivan, sister-in-law, Donna Sullivan and brother-in-law Commodore Beaver.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Monday, December 22, 2008 at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in York with Father’s Mark Tasler and Charles Torpey officiating. Carmen’s body was cremated so there will be no viewing or visitation. However, there will be a Rosary service at 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation
