Kay Kahla

Kathryn “Kay” Laura Kahla, age 67 of York, NE, died Wednesday, January 4, 2012 in Lincoln, NE surrounded by her family. She was born May 4, 1944 in Montevideo, MN to Arthur and Florence (Funk) Nyvold. At a young age her family moved to Conde, SD and she graduated from Conde High School in 1962. Kay received her B.S. in Education from Northern State College in Aberdeen, SD in 1966 and later her M.S. in Education from Kearney State College in 1979. She taught in Conde from 1966-1973 and taught Chemistry and Calculus at York High School from 1975-2002. She was united in marriage to Dale L. Kahla on June 12, 1965 in Conde, SD.

Kay was a member of the Nebraska Board of Medicine and Surgery, served as Chair of Nebraska Equal Opportunities Commission, President of York Education Association for multiple terms, York City Council member, a two time Delegate to the Republican National Convention, Honorary Life Member of Presbyterian Women, Board of Directors and volunteer for CASA for York County, Board of Directors and volunteer for York Adopt-A-Pet, Treasurer of Presbyterian Women for First Presbyterian Church of York, and was the sponsor for ACES at York High School for many years. She was an elder of First Presbyterian Church in York. Kay learned to quilt from her sister Bev and developed a love of quilting in her retirement.

Kay is survived by her husband Dale of York; children and grandchildren: Rick (Kay) Kahla and their children Reagan and Rylie of Gretna, NE; Raquel (Troy) Caldwell and their children Kaelynn and Olivia of Gretna, NE; Rob (Kirsten) Kahla and their children Hunter and Eden of Lincoln, NE; and Roxanne Alhejaj and her children Nilah, Zackarea, and Yasmine of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by her sisters Beverly (Jack) Lytle and Patricia (Doug) Jensen all of Elkton, SD; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren: Dahlia Alhejaj and Samia Alhejaj.

Memorial services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 9, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in York with the Reverend Mike Eickhoff officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at a later date. No viewing or visitation, as it was Kay’s wish to be cremated. Memorials may be directed to York Adopt-A-Pet or York Presbyterian Women.
